Der Mendelssohn-Preis, von 1879 bis 1936 vom Preußischen Staat verliehen, wurde 1963 durch die Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz zu neuem Leben erweckt. Die Stiftung vergibt den seit dann Felix-Mendelssohn-Bartholdy-Preis genannten Preis jährlich pro Wettbewerbsfach einmal an besonders begabte Studierende einer der 23 anerkannten Musikhochschulen Deutschlands.
