Although Mr Hawke signed the Barunga Statement telling the gathering he would organise a treaty between black and white Australians by 1990, it was not a legally binding agreement. 웹The Barunga Statement was presented to (then) Prime Minister Bob Hawke on 12 June 1988. Prime Minister Hawke responded with a statement that the Government was committed to work with Aboriginal people to form a treaty between the Government and Aboriginal people on behalf of all Australians. Unfortunately, no treaty ever eventuated.
